How many children are in each group, and how many educators? Two dedicated facilitators for a homeroom of twenty children is a reasonable benchmark. What matters is whether that holds across the whole day and whether each educator is genuinely responsible for knowing their children as individuals rather than managing the group.
How long do children stay with the same educator? Secure attachment, the foundation of a child's willingness to explore and learn, requires consistency. A child who has a new face at the door each week cannot develop the kind of trust that makes real learning possible. Ask specifically whether the same educators stay with the same group every day, across the whole week.
How long does the day go without an activity change? One of the most underexamined indicators of a quality environment is what researchers call sustained engagement, how long a child is allowed to stay deeply absorbed in one thing before the schedule moves them along. Twenty-minute activity rotations are common in Indian preschools. They are also in conflict with what developmental science shows about how young children actually build concentration. Ask whether children can stay with something for an hour or more when they are deeply engaged.
Are screens used at any point in the day? Not as entertainment, not as a reward, not as background. The evidence on screen exposure in children under five is clear and has been consistent for over a decade. Any school that uses tablets, televisions or phones as part of its programme is making a choice that is not aligned with current developmental research, whatever its marketing materials say.
What does the physical environment look like? A room full of plastic primary-coloured toys and printed alphabets on every wall is designed to signal effort to parents at pickup, not to support deep learning. Natural materials, open-ended objects, materials that children can reach and choose independently, and space that is not visually overwhelming are the marks of an environment designed for children rather than for appearances.
It would be unfair to suggest that all preschools in this part of Hyderabad are the same. Many are run by people who genuinely care about children and work hard within significant constraints. The educators are often warm and attentive. The daily routines are structured and children feel safe.
What is harder to find is an environment that is structured around developing specific capacities, the ability to sustain attention, to direct one's own work, to stay with a difficult problem long enough to actually understand it. Most preschools are designed to manage children through a pleasant day. That is different from designing a day to build something in a child.
Visit more than one school. The difference between environments is often more apparent in person than any amount of research can convey. Ask to observe a session in progress, not a prepared demonstration. Watch what children are doing when no adult is directing them. Watch how educators respond when a child makes a mistake. Watch whether the space feels calm or busy.
Talk to families whose children are already enrolled, if the school allows it. Not about happiness, which is almost universally reported, but about specific things. Has your child developed patience? Does your child choose their own activities at home now? Does your child talk about what they built or made that day?
And ask the school directly what they want your child to be able to do at the end of two years that they cannot do now. The specificity of the answer tells you a great deal.
